Don Chellis Park offers plenty of space for playing baseball, picnicking, and open fields.īecause Beech Grove is surrounded by Indianapolis, there is no room for expansion of the city limits. Hornet Park offers a community center, soccer fields, and tennis courts. Sarah Bolton Park is the largest with facilities for baseball, basketball, and volleyball, as well as a dog park, natural areas, and playgrounds. The city offers plenty of green space for locals and visitors alike to enjoy. Kids work their way through Hornet Park, Central Elementary, South Grove Intermediate, Beech Grove Middle, and Beech Grove High. The Beech Grove City School district serves most of the city's school needs. ![]() The Marching Hornets have garnered state-level honors in both Class C and Class B band competitions. The boys and girls teams have won state, sectional, and local championships. The town is home to the Beech Grove High School Hornets. Indiana is known for its high school basketball and marching bands. The town came into existence in 1906 as a company town for employees who worked at the Beech Grove Shops, a railroad repair facility that still exists today. The town got its name directly from the abundant groves of beech trees that lines the river banks and populated the local woods. As an excluded city, Beech Grove operates its own government agencies, separate from the surrounding city. The larger city of Indianapolis has grown up and around Beech Grove, which is an incorporated city in its own right. ![]() Beech Grove is a city sitting within a city. ![]()
